Europe’s biggest brothel, Club Paradise, has opened in La Jonquera, north east Spain. That’s just across the French border.

The Establishment boasts 80 rooms and two showrooms, with up to 150 girls working at any one time. The girls pay 70 euros (S$127) a day for room and meals. Their clients pay from 60 euros for 30 minutes. It’s estimated that it has some 1,800 girls on its books.

The mayor of La Jonquera, Jordi Cabezas, had originally refused to give the club an operating licence, saying that a police report warned the brothel could cause “security and public order” problems. The ruling was overturned by the Catalan court which ruled that police speculation was not grounds for rejecting the application.

Except for them and a few local priests no one else put up any objections. Indeed the move has been welcomed by restaurants and the local community who are grateful for the increased business the clubs customers bring to the region.

Despite being a catholic country working girls are largely tolerated in Spain.

The Taiwan government is set to allow sex workers to set up small businesses. In a statement on its website, the interior ministry said it would consider brothels of three to five staff away from areas frequented by children. It will submit its ideas to a cabinet committee by the end of the year.

Prostitution had been legal in the capital, Taipei, until 1997 when it was made a criminal offence to be a prostitute though not to visit one. The government stopped prosecuting sex workers last year.

There has never been any shortage of good time girls there. I used to go quite frequently but haven’t been back for a number of years. Snake Alley and its surroundings was a particularly colourful area. I believe the more grisly aspects of it have been banned now. Suffice to say that the gall bladder of a cobra dropped into a shot of whiskey or some other form of alcohol is believed to be a powerful aphrodisiac.
