I don’t get to visit the Philippines as much as I would like. During the the last couple of years my travels have been taking me to more mundane places that offer little in the way of sexual shenanigans, unless you are into camels. Now I’m sure there is fun to be had in those places, you just need a little more inside knowledge than I have at present.

With regard to the Philippines, I’m happy to say that it’s people, especially the girls, are well represented in Hong Kong so even though I don’t get to visit the country very often I can still enjoy some of it’s best attractions. One of the great things about living in Asia is that Christmas decorations don’t start going up before the beginning of December which means I’m not quite as thoroughly sick to death of it by the time the day actually arrives.

I was in an electronics shop a couple of weeks ago buying a new pair of headphones for my iPod. The Christmas music was already playing; “Here comes Santa Claus” if I remember correctly. But it was sung in some ghastly, twee cartoon type of voice that would have made hammering nails into the side of your head seem like blessed relief in comparison.

Of course that kind of thing is popular in Japan and the rather cute cashier was cheerfully singing along. As she counted out my change the bobble of her Santa fell down in front of her face. She tried to blow it away but all that did was make the hat slip forward and dislodge her slightly nerdy black-rimmed glasses. She giggled and shot me a heart-melting smile. Christmas does have its benefits

Kirsty MacColl died ten years ago today. For those of you who don’t know she is the female singer on the Pogues Fairytale of New York which you can usually hear on the radio and in shopping malls at around this time of year.

She was a wonderful singer and songwriter on her own account who preferred to be recognised for those talents rather than just shaking her tits and ass. So she never became a household name. She was musically intelligent and her songs are sassy and astute. You will enrich you life by familiarising yourself with them. Trust me.

Liu Shaowu, director at China’s Ministry of Public Security has advised his officers to treat prostitutes with respect during their operations. This comes after an internet outcry about girls being paraded through city streets in handcuffs after a recent crackdown.

“We used to call them prostitutes but they can now be called fallen women,” Liu told a ministry meeting in Suzhou. “This special group of people also needs respect.” His remarks were quoted in The Beijing News. Insults, discrimination, violence and humiliation are now forbidden and the women’s personal information is to be protected.

Meanwhile in Dortmund, Germany, where prostitution is legal, sex workers are being made to buy a day ticket allowing them to work. The city is hoping that the US$8 ticket will net an extra in US$950,000 a year.
