I always thought Hong Kong had a strong Gotham atmosphere about it. A vast jungle of concrete and neon. Roads just narrow slits between towering skyscrapers. Well, It turns out that a section of the next Batman movie is to be filmed in Hong Kong this coming November

But some local politicians are not so happy. They are worried about traffic chaos, noise from the bat-copter and inconvenience to the public. I scratch my head and wonder.

The city teams with it’s own film and TV crews crawling all over the city, tripping up pedestrians. Traffic chaos is the norm and as for noise … don’t get me started on the noise.

Hong Kong people will not be inconvenienced in the slightest. In fact I wonder if Hollywood realises just what it
is letting itself in for. Hong Kong people will be out in force to cheer the caped crusader on every bat-chase. And believe me Hong Kong people do crowds with considerable aplomb.

Combine that with the fact the the area where the shooting will apparently take place is along a narrow strip of road (which really is called Hollywood Road) sandwiched between Lan Kwai Fong and Soho. Two of Hong Kong’s most popular nightlife districts that are jam packed with clubs, bars and restaurants. Shooting will be at night.

So why should I care about any of this?

Well, I fully expect the bars and clubs to be heaving with star gazers, part-time hookers and opportunists hoping to catch a glimpse of or even meet someone who is, if not famous, at least rich. Others may be hoping for a lucky break, to get noticed.

Add to that the fact that the city’s transient working girls, who wing in from China, the Philippines, Thailand and Eastern Europe on a four week tourist visas, will all be making a beeline for the Fong’s pubs and clubs with roughly the same thing in mind.

Of course it’s highly unlikely that they’ll meet anyone from the movie but they might meet me. I’m looking forward to a busy week. I already have my cards printed.
