Hachiko is a dog. Or rather was a dog. He’s dead now but his statue remains outside the exit of the Yamanote Line station in Tokyo’s trendy Shibuya district. His story is a touching one.

He first moved to Tokyo in 1924 with his owner, a professor at the Imperial University. The two friends were inseparable. Each morning Hachiko would accompany his master to the station on his way to work. On his return the dog would be waiting patiently, tail wagging, happy to see his master again.

One day the professor was taken ill at work and died before he could return home. But he bond between man and dog was strong and Hachiko continued to return to the station each day to wait for a friend that was never coming. He continued this vigil for 10 years eventually dying on the spot where he last saw his friend.

The Japanese have a deep respect for such loyalty and so a statue was erected in Hachiko’s memory. These days the statue is a popular meeting spot. Every afternoon thousands of delectable schoolgirls, dressed in their sexy loose socks, plaid mini-skirts and blazers descend on Shibuya as they crisscross Tokyo.
